지난 7월에 스웨덴 스톡홀름에서 개최된 ISMB 2009에서 맨 마지막 Keynote 연좌인 "Webb Miller" 박사가 주제를 발표하기 전에 생물정보학자로서 성공할 수 있는 10가지 단계에 대해서 언급하였다. 생물정보학을 먼저 공부하신 노학자님의 경륜을 느낄 수 있는 좋은 시간이였다.

1. Become a biologist (생물학자가 되어라)
2. Value your number of citations above your number of publications (논문 편수 보다는 인용수에 가치를 두어라)
   
3. Collaborate and do it with great collaborators (위대한 협력자와 협력하고 협력하라)
   
4. Do not expect a warm welcome from everyone (모든 사람에게 따뜻한 환대를 기대하지 마라)
   
5. Be a good collaborator (우수한 협력자가 되어라)
   
6. Distribute and maintain software and/or run web servers that your personally continue (개인적인 소프트웨어나 웹서버를 배포하고  유지하는 것을 지속하라)
   
7. Alternate between working on specific datasets and writing general-purpose software (특정 데이터셋에 대한 일과 범용 소프트웨어 개발을 번갈아 하라)
   
8. Write some of your own software (조금은 당신 자신의 소프트웨어를 개발하라)
   
9. Don’t give up (포기하지 마라)
10. Be excited about your work (당신일을 즐겨라)
